The Open of 1864 saw the Champion claim the lion's share of a prize fund for the first time, with Old Tom Morris earning six pounds as a result of his third Open victory.

There had been no prize money on offer at each of the first three Championships and although a purse was introduced in 1863, there was no benefit to be gained from winning.
