It was remarkable enough that Rose remained in contention for glory right up until the closing stages, ultimately claiming a share of fourth two shots adrift of Mark O'Meara, who beat Brian Watts in a play-off.

Yet Rose will always be remembered for his final shot of the 1998 Championship, a glorious pitch that found the cup and sparked a huge roar around Royal Birkdale's 18th green.
