Todd Hamilton was ranked much higher than Curtis had been a year earlier and the former had also enjoyed considerable success on the Japan Golf Tour.

Nevertheless, it was still a shock when the 38-year-old from Illinois ended regulation play tied for the lead with Ernie Els and then beat the 2002 Champion in a four-hole play-off.
